Job Description

The Engineering Division of Berkeley Lab is seeking an R&I Electronics Engineering Associate to support the technical and construction efforts for the ALS-U Removal & Installation (R&I) team. We're looking for an Electronics Engineering Associate, aka Electronic Coordinator to join our team to coordinate removal and installation scope, this involves working with various stakeholders to scope out installation and work with installers to implement installation. The role will be heavy on coordination, material handling and documentation under guidance of technical lead.

The ALS () is a world-class accelerator based user facility that provides high intensity high energy photon beams for science. A 200 meter circumference electron accelerator generates photon packets that feed the more than 40 independent beamlines where more than 2000 scientists per year perform their experiments. The ALS has recently started a major accelerator upgrade project to rejuvenate the facility for many years to come.

What You Will Do:

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation for accelerator electrical and electronic systems, including design proposals, specifications, installation instructions, and schematics for ALS-U. Follow ALS-U, LBNL, and industry standards using approved CAD tools and procedures.

  • Create and update electrical drawings per ALS-U/ALS guidelines in Windchill.

  • Write work instructions for installing AC/DC and programmable cabling and equipment.

  • Develop installation and work instructions based on design/subsystem input.

  • Coordinate with onsite electricians and external contractors for electrical installations.

  • Provide guidance to electricians, EM/EI during installation and supervise under managerial direction.

  • Assist with construction and design tasks under the guidance of a technical lead.

  • Manage material handling for electrical subsystem handoffs to Removal & Installation (R&I).

  • Oversee material handling from large procurements to ensure kits align with job requests.

  • Procure and manage inventory of materials based on job requests.

  • Collaborate with subsystems for project integration.

  • Maintain communication with project personnel, contributing to logbooks, online document repositories, and meetings.

  • Supervise non-exempt personnel in project coordination.

Additional Responsibilities as Needed:

  • Support ALS and non-ALS projects at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).

What is Required:

Electronics Engineering Associate:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience professional technical experience preferred or related professional technical experience.

  • Proficiency in electrical safety principles, NFPA-70, NFPA-70E, and the National Electric Code.

  • Solid foundation in CAD design techniques, design rules and specifications; AutoCAD or OrCAD experience.

  • Familiarity with PLM systems like Windchill.

  • Ability to navigate Creo View.

  • Proficient in executing and managing technical projects from start to finish using project management principles.

  • Strong foundation in electronics circuit/system design, testing, and troubleshooting.

  • Effective communicator adept at collaborating with scientists and engineers to define and achieve goals.

  • Skilled in MS Word, Excel, Project, Google Workspace, and Zoom.

  • Strong organizational and record-keeping capabilities.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Up to 3 years of relevant field experience.

  • Previous experience in installation and maintenance work.

  • Background in construction-related projects.

Salary:

The expected salary for this position is $93,000.00 - $114,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $82,728.00 - $139,644.00 annually depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
